Introduction
Alton Cricket Club was founded circa 1869, making
it one of the most historic and prestigious clubs in
Hampshire.
We now run five Saturday league sides; two Sunday
league sides; provide youth cricket for Under 9, 11,
13, 15 and 17’s and a new Ladies team.
We compete in leagues across the South of England
including the Southern Premier League, Hampshire League,
l’Anson League, Ladies Hampshire League, North
Hampshire Cricket League and Three Counties Sunday League.
Membership base of over 200, including in excess
of 120 Colts, Under 9 to Under 17. The increased interest
in cricket generally and the C2S initiative is expected
to swell the colts section alone by at least 40 within
1st year. Without improving facilities we could be turning
youngsters away.
The 1st XI has recently won the Premier League Division
3 title in 2003 with an unbeaten season! Finished 3rd
then 2nd in Division 2 gaining promotion in 2005 to
the Southern Electric Premier League Division 1.
The 2nd XI has recently won Promotions in 2 of the
last 4 seasons and are now in County Div1. last season
also saw the 3rds and 4th teams win promotion from their
respective divisions. The Sunday 2nd XI also won their
league for the first time last year.
The colts sections have also been successful with
all age groups winning a league or cup last year. The
U17 having a particularly successful season winning
League and Cup Double as well as Sports Council Team
of the Year award.
The colts were also very successful in having a large
number gain representative honours at District and County
level.
Four of the under 17 colts played 1st XI cricket
last season. Numerous others from the U13,15 and 17
played at various levels from 2nds to 5th XI’s
Initiatives - What is going on now?
ACC have recently been involved with cricket in the
community with formal links to 3 junior schools and
1 senior school. This year we have increased our commitment
to the community by signing up to the Chance to Shine
initiative (C2S). We are now committed to providing
coaching in 7 junior schools and at least 3 senior schools.
We are also running summer cricket schools and additional
coaching sessions at the Jubilee fields. These are currently
for boys and girls and we hope with the improved practice
facility to be able to offer the opportunity to disabled
children and adults.
ACC have been selected as a ‘Focus’ Club
by the Hampshire Cricket Board and have attained the
prestigious Clubmark Award. An award that recognises
good club management, sports equity and child welfare.
* ACC are also at the forefront of ladies cricket,
with a team, competing again this year in the Ladies
Hampshire Cricket League. We are also hoping to continue
with our policy of hosting at least two disabled county
cricket games at the Jubilee Playing Fields in 2007.
The club now boasts 8 colts teams from under 9 to
17, teams in indoor competitions at Dummer and The Rosebowl
(Home of Hampshire).
Competing in The Two Counties League and Cup competitions.
North Hants League and Cup Competitions.
County Cup competitions.
Southern Electric Premier League U16 League and Cup.
Dummer Indoor Centre League and Cup.
Facilites
Alton have as stated earlier been in existence since
1869 and have used 3 grounds. The Old Brewery ground
(Courage's), Anstey Park and for the last 27 years Jubilee
Fields. (The JCG). Over those years the requirement
for practice and coaching facilities has changed and
increased considerably
The Townsmen were among the first in Hampshire to
run Colts Junior Cricket teams. The old concrete strip
at Anstey Park which catered for the 2 Men's teams became
redundant as the Town club increased to 3 teams and
Colts cricket started.
However the practice facilities available in the
town have not progressed as the club has improved and
increased in size. The Club 20 years ago installed an
artificial match strip ( currently used with mobile
nets). This is not ideal as it overuses the artificial
strip and only offers one facility and with sometimes
in excess of 25 colts at practice it is not practical.
The club itself has invested heavily in coaches and
improving Club organisation however it has been unable
to improve the facilities it offers for practice and
coaching. Temporary measures over the past 4 seasons
have included the purchase of Mobile nets.
Continuing Development of Main Ground and Changing
Facilities has assisted together with playing standards
in gaining accreditation to Southern Premier League
Gold Division. We aim to maintain this development!
In order to continue the improvement on both facility
and playing fronts it has become increasingly obvious
that the club urgently needs improved practice and coaching
facility.
The Club has identified the URGENT requirement for
a 4 lane net facility, it has been trying to agree a
suitable position and area on Jubilee with the Groundsman
and Town Clerk before bringing it to the Recreation
committee. The Club has worked with the groundsmen to
find a suitable solution for all parties and fully understand
that there are lots of other ground users to consider.
We have held several meetings at the ground and are
pleased to say that we have reached an agreement, however
we do realise that we are on a Council owned Sports
field and must consider the other users. With this in
mind we have tried to include several factors which
we hope will find the committees approval.
What Is Required
The Facility we are looking to install at Jubilee is
a 4 lane net.
Features including.
Artificial surface 35 By 16M.
3M high Weldmesh fence. 1 no lockable double gate.
4 Lane netting
Roof netting
Footpath to double gate
Split artificial surface. 50% cricket batting surface
and 50% multisports surface
Dividing net. ( Multi-sports (Bowling end/ (Cricket
(Batting end))
Provision of a Multisports surface, suitable for
practice, junior hockey, junior soccer practice and
playgroup etc use
Funding the Project
Alton Cricket Club has an excellent working
relationship with the town council and are obviously
looking to build on this for the future. We see this
is a vital part of the continued success of not only
Cricket but Sport in the Town.
We are therefore looking to the Recreation Committee
for support and approval. The Club are currently investigating
grants for the project from many sources, ECB, Awards
for All, ATC, etc. We are also raising funds from within
the club and additional local sponsors.
The Club appreciates that should the facility be successful
then it would become the property of the Council with
an agreed protocol in place regarding usage, maintenance
etc.
The club are also concerned that without these or any
improved facilities they may have to review the opportunities
provided by them to the youth of the Town.

Roof Net
JCG- An alternative layout (traditional)
with a 50% roof net
This is not a preferred option for the groundstaff
who would prefer the option shown on previous slide.
(However this is the cheaper option).
This system makes the netting less versatile and
reduces use possibilities.
Fencing Styles – Jubilee Practice

The Club aims for continuous improvement to both its
membership base and cricket teams and also the grounds
and facilities. The Club has a documented Development
Plan to achieve this aim. Actions include:
Maintain grounds and facilities accreditation to the
Gold standard awarded by the Southern Electric Premier
League (The highest league ACC can attain in the country)
Develop a successful Ladies Cricket Section
Continue with the current excellent coaching program
for all senior, junior and now female members.
Provide for the Town and local community a safe and
adequate facility for people of all abilities to play,
practice and watch.
Continue to work closely with the Local Council to
maintain the high standards we have set.
