2nd XI on fire at Fareham

Alton 2nd XI thumped Fareham & Crofton on Saturday as they kept their outside hopes of promotion alive.

Choosing to bat first on the seafront, Alton’s innings was based around 90 from Howard Gadsby, making a timely return to form. Brad Kneebone made a solid 34, and the innings was given a boost by Mike Salmon’s 44 towards the latter half as the Brewers posted an imposing 283.

Fareham were never in the hunt as Alex Hughes struck with the first ball of their reply.

Off-spinner Lee Partner took the new ball at the other end and bowled a superbly controlled spell, claiming three wickets.

Fellow off-spinner Tom Paul also claimed three with some prodigious turn, while youngster Dan Scott also claimed two wickets in another promising spell.

Jack Myers claimed the last wicket to fall as the home side stumbled to 106 all out, leaving Alton hoping that one of the unbeaten top two falter within sight of the finishing line.
