Marshall hits ton as Alton Brewers win at Burridge

It was no surprise after losing the toss that Alton were invited to bat first on a green top at Burridge. The openers Gemma Porter and Sarah Cray knew that their job was to see off the openers Chloe Hulse and the ex-Havant star Loren Dean, and they did that with great success. Despite Loren getting the ball to move about and Chloe to constantly probing outside off stump, the Brewers openers held firm. Most of the Alton runs were from the bat of Porter who played with a mixture of defence and aggression, never missing a chance to keep the score ticking along. When Gemma was caught, excellently at deep cover by skipper Michelle Murphy, the base was set and Amelia Marshall knew she only had to see off a few deliveries before the change bowlers would be on. Sarah continued in an excellent supporting role, getting gradually more offensive and despite a very close run-out call there were few chances. When Sarah was eventually out LBW to Mackenzie Wright the score had moved onto 95. Sara Heffernan joined youngster Marshall and the pair set about building a match winning 144 run partnership. Shorty after the second drinks break Amelia got her century and in the next over Sara celebrated her own milestone as she scored her first half century since 2010. Both Amelia and Sara were stumped shortly after, pushing the score along which gave Chloe Toft, Gemma Lane and Abi Green the chance to come in and hit a few with no concerns, and take the score to 273.

After a lovely tea in the main clubhouse Nic Gadsby, the Alton skipper, was keen to unleash the dual pace attack of Abi Green and Gemma Lane onto the hosts. The first 10 overs were lovely to watch, a combination of outswing from Abi, with the odd in-ducker; and late in-swing from Gemma using the head wind to support. The Burridge batters did not look comfortable and whist the wickets could have come at either end, it was Abi who picked up 3 victims, including the Hampshire pairing of Loren and Mackenzie; the latter to a great catch from Catherine Bayliss. With the middle order exposed Gadsby made a double change bringing on herself and Sarah Murphy. Sarah quickly making her mark on the game removing Ali Burgess lbw before enticing an edge off the bat of Chloe Hulse through to Amelia keeping wicket. The next phase of the game saw Chloe Toft removing Holly Montgomery c&b and Gemma Lane running out Rebecca Gunstone after an excellent deflection from the gloves of Amelia. After a brief spell of off spin from Gemma P, Nic switched back to her opening attack and this time it was Gemma Lane who picked up wickets, taking 2 in her last 2 deliveries – hattrick ball at Aldershot?

Another solid performance by the Alton girls, who face Aldershot in two weeks time at Aldershot.
