Young Brewers Topple Havant

After a comprehensive defeat in their game Alton 1st XI went into the visit of Havant looking for an improved performance and a first win of the season..
There were 2 changes to the Alton side with teenagers Tom South and Freddie Egleston making their debuts bringing the average age of the side below 24.
As in the first game Captain Dan Harris won the toss and decided to bat on a good looking pitch. Harris opened with Ryan Covey and together the pair gave Alton a solid start moving the score along to 77 before Harris was caught by Gadd off of the bowling of young Havant player Darren Stares for 35 made from 52 balls. Covey soon followed with the score at 84 for a well made 44 from 58 balls, caught by Havant captain Chris Morgan off of experienced Richard Hindley. When Scott Myers was caught by Charlie Whitfield off of left arm spinner Morgan, Alton were wobbling at 93-3. At this point Hampshire Academy prospect South entered the fray for Alton and together with Alex Hammond put on a stand of 49 before Hammond was bowled by Morgan for 12. At this point Alton were 142-4 and this soon became 149-6 as first South was caught and bowled by Morgan for 36 and then Egleston was bowled by Morgan without troubling the scorers. This left Morgan with impressive figures of 4-27 from his 8 overs.
At this stage, with overs running out, Captain Harris decided to send in Toby Salmon to partner youngster Jude Wright and together they took the Alton score along to 196-6 from the allotted 40 overs with Salmon contributing 34 not out from 24 balls and Wright a handy 15 not out.
As with the first game of the season against Hampshire Academy the total gave Alton something to defend but there was a feeling that they were potentially 20-30 runs short.
Havant open their reply with 2 youngsters of their own and they took the score to 21 before Whitfield was LBW to Dan Scott for 5. This saw experienced Peter Hopson join Harry Gadd at the crease and they moved the score along to 42-2 before Gadd was bowled by Scott for 27, having been dropped the ball before by Hammond at Mid On.
At this point Havant were probably favourites to go on and win the game, with regular Southern Premier League run scorers Chris Stone, Hindley, Jez Bulled and Morgan due to come in, in what looked a very strong middle order and the fact they were ahead of the required run rate.
Alton turned to Ryan Covey (1-16) and leg spinner Jack Myers (1-18) and in the next 11 overs bowling together they put a bit of a stranglehold on the run rate, and whilst only conceding 34 runs between them removed Hopson for 17 caught by South off of Covey, Hindley run out without scoring attempting to break the shackles and Stone caught by Egleston at deep square leg sweeping Myers for 19 made from 36 balls. Havant were now 76-5 and for the first time in their innings there was a feeling that Alton had wrestled the initiative, but with Bulled still at the crease and the dangerous Morgan joining him the game was very much in the balance.
Alton skipper Harris, aware that the game could go right to the end and wanting to keep overs in the locker from Covey and Myers, made a double change and entrusted the next overs to the teenage pairing of Wright (15) and Bochereau (19). It looked a bold move when Morgan took a liking to Bochereau’s first over, but in the very next over Wright had him trapped LBW for 25 made at a run a ball and the score was 111-6.
Wright continuing to bowl with good pace and bounce then had Freddie Gadd caught by Salmon for 3 with the score on 127 and Bochereau (1-39), having recovered from his first over, settled into a good rhythm and had Bulled caught by Egleston for 27 with the score at 137.
Wright (3-26) then had Stares caught by Harris for 1 with the score at 149 before some late order hitting from Richard Jerry (36*) took the score to 175, at which point returning opener Salmon (1-30) removed Alfie Taw for 4 and Havant were all out.
So in the end a good all round performance by Alton which led to them picking up their first win of the season with maximum points gained.
