This game was an important one for many reasons: firstly, it was Stephen Ball's last game, so we wanted him to go out with a bang before he starts his new job in the Isle of Man, and the second reason was that we badly wanted to win.
1st innings - It was a hot, humid and partly cloudy day at JCG #2. As the captains reached the pitch to do the toss, which was won by Peper Harrow, who elected to bat. Peper Harrow’s openers started well with Faisal Latif (19) and Ben Elson (14) getting them off to a good start. The pace attack of Harry Cavell (3-20), Josh Jones (1-23), Kiran Varma (1-28) and Jon Porter (2-16) took 7 wickets between them to get out batsmen 1,2,3,4,6,7,9.
However, Peper Harrow had Alam Khurshaid (37), who was scoring quickly, hitting anything he could to the fence, and eventually he tried hitting the spin of Strats as far as he could and top edged it to Alex Housley, who was fielding at cover, taking a comfortable catch. After that wicket, nothing got going for Peper Harrow, and that meant Strats (3-7), cleaned up the tail end, restricting the opposition to 96.
Tea - Alton grabbed their tea and sat in a circle as a group to discuss the 2nd innings.
2nd innings - As the day got hotter, our openers took to the crease. Ollie Billington (18) and Stephen Ball (4), started the scoring off with a couple of boundaries until Stephen Ball got bowled by Alam Khurshaid (5-31), who got the following out: Ollie Billington (18), Jon Porter (7), Harry Cavell (16), Kiran Varma (0). After the two openers got out, it was the partnership of Alex (10) and Rich Housley (13) that pushed the Brewers' score closer to the winning target of 97 with a great cameo from Harry Cavell (16). Other people who took wickets for Peper Harrow included Faisal Latif (1-29), Naqib Kan (1-8) and Brian Bunch (2-10).
Over 24.3, the Brewers needed one run to win as the scores were tied and Josh Jones was on strike and played the ball late through cover-point, meaning that a huge roar came from the pavilion, knowing that the game was over and good cricket had been displayed from both sides but Alton came out on top winning by 1 wicket.
